You do not need a finance degree to get your money under control. You do not need a complicated spreadsheet either. What you need is a starting point. That is exactly what a simple monthly budget gives you.

I have worked in finance for over 20 years. And the number one thing I see holding women back is not a lack of income. It is a lack of clarity. When you do not know where your money is going, you feel stuck. A budget fixes that.

Here is how to build your first one in about 30 minutes.

Step 1: Know What Comes In

Before you touch a single expense, write down every dollar that comes in each month. That includes your salary, any side income, freelance work, or anything else. Do not estimate. Check your bank or pay stub and get the real number.

This is your foundation. Everything else in your budget is built around this number.

Step 2: List Your Fixed Expenses First

Fixed expenses are the ones that stay the same every month. Think rent or mortgage, car payment, insurance, and any subscriptions. These are non-negotiable, so list them first.

Add them up. Subtract them from your income. What is left is what you actually have to work with for everything else.

Step 3: Track Your Variable Expenses

Variable expenses change month to month. Groceries, dining out, gas, personal care, shopping. These are the categories where most people are surprised by how much they are actually spending.

Do not judge yourself. Just get honest. The goal right now is clarity, not perfection.

Step 4: Set One Savings Goal

Even if it is just $25 a month, give yourself a savings goal. An emergency fund is the most important place to start. Financial stress goes down when you know you have something set aside. Start small. Build the habit first.

Step 5: Look at What Is Left

Once you subtract your fixed expenses, variable expenses, and savings from your income, you will see your real picture. If the number is positive, great. That is money you can put toward goals. If it is negative, now you know exactly what needs to change. That knowledge is power.
